US Open 2016: Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka reach final

Stan the man: Stan Wawrinka is into the US Open final. The third-seeded Wawrinka, on the other hand, was pushed to four sets three times, including in a grueling semifinal with No. 6 Kei Nishikori.

Djokovic has 12 Grand Slam titles and five short of Federer's 17, the all-time record in tennis men's singles.

Defending champion Djokovic had completed just three matches in six rounds at the US Open after a freakish run blighted by injury withdrawals, but paid the price for his lack of court time when Wawrinka dragged him into a gruelling duel. "I allowed myself to drop the concentration and to lose the momentum for a little bit, but luckily I got back". "For sure he made me better", Wawrinka said.

"He also started to get exhausted a little bit and that's when I started to get my game, to be aggressive. My thoughts are only on Sunday's match".

This marks a 100% success rate for Stan Wawrinka at Grand Slam finals - staggering considering he has only won one Masters tilte - at the 2014 Monte Carlo-Rolex Masters. Wawrinka is 2-0 in grand slam finals even though he was underdogs on both those occasions - 2014 Australian Open to Nadal and 2015 French Open to Djokovic.

Djokovic has described Monfils as the only player he would buy a ticket to watch and the Frenchman delivered an entertaining if unconventional display that drew both anger and applause. "He loves the big stage".

Pete Sampras was the last player over-30 to win in NY and that was back in 2002.

"So I went through it all". I hoped and I believed that as I progressed in the tournament that things would get better, which they did.

"This is honestly ... this is wonderful", Wawrinka said during the on-court trophy ceremony.

"I think he's so good that he always find a way to be better". That's certainly been the case this year at Flushing Meadows. That court time included an epic four-hour, third-round match in which he had to battle back in five sets against Britain's Daniel Evans. "He's the number one player, an awesome fighter, unbelievable player, but I have enough confidence in myself that when I play my best level I can beat him".

Wawrinka, 31, is one of those sportsmen who has been getting better with age. When on-target, it might be the prettiest, and most effective, shot in all of tennis.

Djokovic was briefly affected but in the end was too strong. As do his body-twisting court coverage and ability to go from defense to offense just like that.

Think about this: Wawrinka almost was gone before the end of the US Open's first week.

The defending champion has had an easy passage to the final playing only 14 sets over six rounds after three of his opponents, including quarter-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, retired due to injuries.

"He's a very powerful player".
