New poll shows Trump ahead in Ohio

The presidential race may be tightening nationally, but Hillary Clinton still has the edge in the states she'll need to win in November - including one previously rated as a toss-up by The Associated Press.

Suffolk found Trump with the support of 44% of likely North Carolina voters, a statistically insignificant three points better than Clinton's 41%.

Trump has edged ahead of Clinton in a new CNN/ORC poll, at 45% to 43%, while an NBC News poll of registered voters shows Clinton's lead holding at six percentage points - 48% to 42%.

Voters across these states do bemoan the loss of national unity that they felt in the aftermath of the terror attacks: 52 percent say that spirit has vanished now.

The near tie in the latest CNN/ORC results came in sharp contrast to Clinton's eight-point lead among registered voters in its early August poll following the Democratic Convention.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump speaks to supporters through a bullhorn during a campaign stop at the Canfield County Fair in Canfield, Ohio, U.S., September 5, 2016. Trump backers in particular agree - nearly all of them think it should be at least part of the approach - along with immigration restrictions at home: nearly all of them think that ought to play a role, including 89 percent who see such restrictions playing a major role in anti-terror policy. Head-to-head, Trump leads, 46% to 43%. He leads Clinton by 6 points (43 percent to 37 percent) among those respondents. "Where did those five points go?" asked Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

For most in these states, that fight against terror involves, at least in part, using military power against terrorists whenever possible - 94 percent say so, including 60 percent who'd like it to play a major part. 36% of Hispanic voters back the Republican nominee, up from 30% in July. Independent voters have a less favorable view of Clinton (70 percent unfavorable) than Trump (57 percent unfavorable). White voters back Trump 53 -38 percent, as non-white voters go to Clinton 81 -11 percent.

After the Republican candidate made a sudden trip to Mexico last week to meet President Enrique Pena Nieto, Clinton said Trump choked because he failed to discuss his demand that Mexico pay for Trump's border wall.

Clinton and Trump are both viewed unfavorably by a majority of likely voters; 56 percent have an unfavorable view of Trump, and 57 percent view Clinton unfavorably. Democrats back Clinton 90 - 7 percent.
