Pollster: Pa. 'back in play' in presidential race

- Democrat Hillary Clinton's double-digit lead in last month's Quinnpiac University poll has been cut in half, according a new survey released Thursday by the polling center. More respondents also said they had an unfavorable view of Clinton-56 percent-than said the same of Trump-54 percent. Fifty-three percent are not confident in Clinton's ability to lead the military either. She was alluding to comments made by Trump at a July news conference, when he said, "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing". It's the kind of day Clinton needs to avoid.

Hillary Clinton embarks Monday on a campaign swing across battleground states, bringing traveling press aboard her plane for the first time as she seeks to regain momentum against her White House rival Donald Trump.

Clinton has already adopted an aggressive approach this week. She's held briefings for reporters on her new campaign jet two days in a row. And she blasted his business career, which is at the center of his campaign as full of "scams" and "frauds".

Trump may have also benefited from Clinton's own troubles about her use of a private email server as secretary of state and a persisting perception that the family-run Clinton Foundation may have profited from her term at state.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton start the race to November 8 on essentially even ground, with Trump edging Clinton by a scant two points among likely voters, and the contest sparking sharp divisions along demographic lines in a new CNN/ORC Poll. Trump told the labor meeting his rising poll numbers are a sign his messages about tossing bad global trade deals and curbing illegal immigration are resonating with voters. "A hundred percent, they will pay for the wall".

But time and again, the GOP nominee's own controversial statements have dominated the news cycle and diverted attention away from Clinton's problems. "We are on a course that we are sticking with".

Both candidates will spend much of the remaining 9 weeks of the campaign in key battleground states that are expected to decide the election.

Yet the risks for the notoriously unpredictable Trump are enormous.

"Yes, that's right - the Most Qualified Candidate In World History admitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation that she had no idea how classification worked".

It is without dispute that the hurdles for Trump are enormous. For results among registered or likely voters, the margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. That was close to the 85 per cent Mitt Romney enjoyed as the Republican nominee in 2012.

The survey shows Trump with 45% of likely voter support, Clinton with 43%, Libertarian Gary Johnson with 7%, and the Green Party's Jill Stein with 2%. Trump's respective numbers tend to fluctuate more, but show the opposite trend.

And although Trump is on the losing side in this question, he fares better than nearly every Republican in the last 24 years.

Beyond that, the demographic where Trump runs strongest - non college-educated white men - is dropping as a share of the electorate each year. The lone exception: George W. Bush during his re-election campaign in 2004, when 52% thought he would outperform John Kerry before their first debate.
