Saudi Arabia Agrees to Trump's Yemen, Syria Safe Zone Request

The US President and King Salman also "agreed on the importance of rigorously enforcing the (nuclear) deal with Iran and of addressing Tehran's destabilising regional activities".

President Trump's predecessor Barack Obama resisted Republican calls to set up safe zones on the grounds that such a move - which could involve ground troops and extra USA aircraft if a "no fly zone" is created - would draw the country deeper into Syria's complex civil war.

President Trump and King Salman discussed a strategic partnership to fight radical Islamic terrorism and ways to cooperate in regional Middle-Eastern security.

US President Donald Trump will speak with the Saudi King and Crown Prince of United Arab Emirates on Sunday over phone, amid an uproar over his controversial immigration order against people from seven Muslim-majority countries.

For more than a year on the campaign trail, Trump promised to halt the flow of Syrian refugees into the country, warning that they could be a "Trojan horse", a secret terrorist army that could destroy the nation.

The conversation comes days after Trump signed an order that temporarily suspends the USA refugee program and indefinitely bars Syrian refugees.

The remarks help shed more light on Mr Trump's Middle East policy by signaling he would improve ties with the Gulf Arab monarchies that felt shunned by the U.S. under the Obama administration, which focused on clinching a nuclear deal with Iran.

Saudi Arabia will boost its participation in the worldwide coalition against Islamic State and other terrorist groups, the Saudi source said.

Although it did not mention Iran specifically, it said that the two leaders held the same position on certain issues. And a domino effect could create a precipitous decline in global student enrollment from Muslim-majority countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

"There are 56 Muslim countries that could join forces and take action to prevent entry of Americans in protest against the racism of Trump, take revenge for our dignity and give a lesson to others, but the honorable men have disappeared", tweeted Egyptian intellectual Abdel Bari Atwan.
