Stats Canada census data shows Castlegar population increase

That group made up one-quarter of the overall population growth in the Capital Regional District.

Despite Nova Scotia's low growth rates over the last several decades, Dr. Stacey Hallman, a demography analyst with Statistics Canada told The Chronicle Herald it's not so much a downward trend as it is stagnation.

The steady growth of the Guelph and area population may seem obvious to anyone living in or visiting the city. Forty years later, this proportion declined to 23.2 per cent.

Although most of the growth is in Winnipeg, many rural communities are also expanding quite rapidly.

"The first 2016 census data released by Statistics Canada confirm that, ultimately Brantford, is growing at a healthy rate", Maria Visocchi, the city's manager of corporate communications, said in an email Wednesday. In comparison, the Central Kootenay average was an increase of 1.8 per cent, the provincial average was an increase of 5.6 per cent and the national average was an increase 5.0 per cent.

"Langford had the fastest population growth (on the island) - it grew by more than 6,000 people", said Ramlo.

Nunavut is the fastest-growing area in the country.

Guelph joined St. Catharines-Niagara and Windsor among Ontario CMAs with accelerated growth.

Three other Prairie cities rounded out the top five in growth, including Saskatoon, Regina and Lethbridge, Alta.

On May 10, 2016, Quebec had 8,164,361 inhabitants among the 35,151,728 in Canada.

As a part of Wednesday's release, StatsCan also announced that over the coming year, as Canadians celebrate 150 years since Confederation, "the agency will unveil the full range of census data that will together paint a factual picture of the lives of Canadians and their communities". At that time, 3.5 million people lived in Canada.

As of the May 10, 2016 census tally, Winnipeg's CMA-as defined by StatsCan-boasted a population of 778,489, up from 2011's count of 730,018.

A Statistics Canada graphic shows Canada's population growth over the years, powered by migratory increase and natural increase.

The population grew by more than 70,000 since 2011, an increase of 5.8 per cent.

Statistics Canada attributes Manitoba's growth to worldwide migration. But the province -which also houses about one-third of the Canadian population - saw the most new dwellings in absolute terms, with 281,666 created between 2011 and 2016.

- Almost one-third of Canadians (31.6 per cent) live in Western Canada, and the bulk of those are in B.C. (13.2 per cent) and Alberta (11.6 per cent).

As of 2016, 13.6 per cent of Canadians live in B.C., leaving the province the third largest in the country. The border area represents just four per cent of the country's territory.

Between 2011 and 2016, the Yukon had the fourth highest population growth rate in Canada, tying with Manitoba.

- At 11.6 per cent, Alberta continued to have the highest growth rate of all the provinces, up from 10.8 per cent in 2011. "People who leave New Brunswick, and settle elsewhere in Canada", Denis said.
