Lawyer: Dragged passenger 'poster child' for airline abuses

A United Airlines passenger suffered a concussion, broken nose and lost teeth when he was wrenched from his seat and dragged down the aisle of a plane, the man's lawyer said Thursday.

But how exactly was he picked?

Airlines overbook flights using an algorithm to offset losses from seats that would otherwise go empty should a passenger not show up.

United Airlines said due to pending legal action they can't say much about the brutal fashion Dr. Dao was pulled off one of their flights - but they did apologize a lot.

David Dao, a 69-year-old Vietnamese-American doctor, was hospitalized after Chicago aviation police dragged him from the plane as the airline sought to make space on a flight from the city's O'Hare International Airport to Louisville, Kentucky.

One of the doctor's five children, Crystal Pepper, appeared alongside Mr Demetrio and said the family was "horrified, shocked and sickened" by what happened.

Demetrio said the family plans to file a lawsuit once the lawyer's investigators are completed and hinted that United Airlines may not be the only defendant in the case.

For Dao, who came to the USA after fleeing Vietnam by boat in 1975 when Saigon fell, being dragged off the plane "was more horrifying and harrowing than what he experienced in leaving Vietnam", Demetrio said. The incident happened last week on a flight from Houston to Calgary, Canada. The fourth was posted on the company's website Thursday after a news conference by the passenger's attorneys. He said that while the contract allows United to deny passengers boarding, it says nothing about removing a passenger from a plane unless the passenger is disruptive.

"I look down and I thought, 'aw, it kind of looks like a little lobster.'" she said.

United said it will release the results of its review on April 30. "That's my promise." In the future, law enforcement will not be involved in removing a "booked, paid, seated passenger", Munoz said. Like you, I continue to be disturbed by what happened on this flight and I deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard.

"I would defy anyone to suggest there was not unreasonable force and violence used to help Dr. Dao disembark that plane", said Demetrio, who along with Stephen Golan, is representing Dao.

This all started when officials said Dao refused to leave the plane after being selected, a moment, the airline regrets.

We sincerely hope that United undergoes a serious evaluation of its internal policies so this kind of incident never happens again, and are wishing Dr. Dao a speedy and complete recovery. One of the gate or flight attendants should have been the adult in the cabin and figured all that out before the improper tool, (the officers) were called to remove a elderly man who just wanted to get home.
