Rose, Garcia Tied For Lead Heading Into Masters Final Round

T1 Sergio Garcia (-6): A few slip-ups (two bogeys), but three birdies kept him on pace.

Rickie Fowler was a shot off the lead after returning a 71, with 2015 champion Jordan Spieth another stroke back alongside compatriots Ryan Moore and Charley Hoffman.

Hoffman will be in the final group going into the weekend at the Masters for the second time in three years, with one big difference.

Will it be Rose or Garcia take home the Green Jacket? Hoffman battled for par on the last hole to stay just two shots behind.

Spieth, 23, won the Masters two years ago and was runnerup last year after losing a five-shot lead on the back nine.

"It was the same thing I've been doing all week, fighting hard", said Garcia, who has 22 top-10 finishes in his 73 major appearances without winning. He drilled a 5-iron into 30 feet and narrowly missed the eagle putt. Day followed up an early bogey with birdies on six of his next 13 holes, including four straight at the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th holes to make an early charge. More than just survive on Friday, he posted a 5-under 67 that gave him a share of the lead for the first time in a major. Garcia made bogey, dropping him to 3 under.

"Jose sent me a attractive message on Wednesday night, and you know, he has a good touch when it comes down to those things". Rickie Fowler begins the day 5-under and will be paired with Spieth in the final round.

Jordan Spieth is now ominously poised behind the front-runners, as the American continues to produce a remarkable recovery after ending the first day of play 10 shots off the lead.

"I felt I could have been significantly lower in the first two rounds but I've been very patient with that", Rose said. "You know, you can put yourself in bad positions even trying to play the safe spot". But really, it starts on the back nine on Sunday.

"Everybody knows with this back nine, anything can happen", Hoffman said. It is unique among the four majors in golf because it is the only major tournament, which is held at the same golf course every year. Moments later, he realized the ball bounced softly enough off the side of the bank to stop halfway down.

He then chipped to a foot and made the birdie.

"Got a great break on 13", he said.

The 37-year-old Spaniard finished off his round by clenching his fist when a 7-foot par putt dropped into the cup for a 70.

Garcia and Rose were at 6-under 210.

Rallying in the third round, Spieth's Moving Day was in jeopardy of stalling as he found his drive on the pine straw to the right of the fairway, 230 yards away from the hole on the first of two par 5s on the second nine. Fowler and Spieth in the penultimate group. "I think that at the end of the day, that's really the only thing you can do". "I don't think anyone will put themselves too far out in front where they can cruise in".

Perhaps the most daunting name at Augusta National was Spieth, who began this Masters with a quadruple-bogey 9 on the 15th hole of the opening round and was 10 shots out of the lead when he trudged off the course Thursday. "If you have a chance you have to go for it and pull off the shot". Two holes later, he almost holed a wedge from the 15th fairway.

Sergio Garcia of Spain celebrates making par on the 18th in third round play during the 2017 Masters golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, U.S., April 8, 2017. He had a two-shot lead with 11 holes to play in his debut in 2014 before Bubba Watson overtook him. Now I have a chance of winning the tournament I dreamed of as a kid. "I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I don't even know how much it would mean to be able to join both my idols as a Masters victor".
