Jackie Robinson a golden Dodger now immortalized in bronze

This year marks the 70th anniversary of that historic day and, as is customary, there were celebrations throughout the league and all players wore Robinson's No. 42.

The second-year shortstop, who signed a six-year, $25 million contract with the Sox during spring training, said he draws inspiration from Robinson and in turn wants to inspire children from Chicago. Many historians believe Robinson's breakthrough was an early step that eventually led to other civil rights breakthroughs. As has been the case over the past several seasons, each player on each team will be wearing Robinson's No. 42 to honor the baseball pioneer. The team will unveil his likeness during Jackie Robinson Day festivit. "But he's somebody we in the African-American community celebrate every day. He would have wanted that very much", Sharon Robinson said.

The 77-inch statue is made of bronze and depicts Robinson stealing home. Here he is 70 years later being recognized.

Yankees DH Matt Holliday is playing against the Cardinals this weekend for the first time since ending his eight-year run with St. Louis.

The statue - on the reserve level, along the left-field line - will be dedicated Saturday afternoon, the reverence of the occasion such that it is invitation-only, the significance such that Sandy Koufax will be among the attendees.

The family shared numerous photos of Robinson with Cadet. He used to come home and say, 'I got a standing ovation today.' He'd be shocked.

Even though he passed away in 1972, Robinson's legacy is still felt.

Rachel Robinson, Jackie's widow and wife of 26 years, is said to be making the trek for the statue's reveal. Campanis also tutored Robinson on how to protect himself when opposing players tried to spike him, which happened more often because he was black.
