New York City 'could force Uber to offer in-app tipping'

New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission said on Monday, it is proposing that any auto service that only uses credit cards (i.e., every ride-hailing app in existence) have the option to tip built into the app.

The TLC's action on tipping rules comes after the commission held its biannual hearing on for-hire driver earnings earlier this month. Rather than create a tipping option in the app, Uber then told riders who wished to tip that they could do so in cash.

Uber spokeswoman Alix Anfang said the company will review the proposed rule once it's drafted. New York City is the company's largest US market, making it painful to exit should Uber choose not to comply with the potential policy change.

IDG, which formed last May, is a coalition of 50,000 drivers for companies like Uber, Lyft and Juno. The petition was created by the Independent Drivers Guild, a group representing Uber drivers in NY, and it got over 11,000 signatures, though it still is about 1,800 away from its goal of 12,800.

Instead, we got BS features like "driver compliments," in which riders could send quirky compliments ("great conversation!") to drivers beyond leaving them a starred rating.

While the TLC has been careful not to name specific companies, the guild clearly designed its rule with Uber in mind. The taxi commission has the authority to initiate rulemaking on its own, but rules must be certified by city legal authorities.

Most drivers of the estimated 1.5 lakh app-based taxis in Delhi-NCR have decided not to take out their vehicles on Tuesday.

While Uber hasn't yet added a tipping button to its app, Lyft has had one for a while now; it would already be in compliance with the proposed rule should it pass. Uber has a history of pulling out of locations when rules change that aren't in its favor, but it's hard to imagine the company leaving NYC.

"People do want to tip and they actually feel uncomfortable when they get out of the auto and they don't leave a tip for the driver", Conigliaro said.

The court also stopped the unions and their members or associates from removing or confiscating mobile devices installed in the app-based cabs and restrained them from staging dharnas or causing commotion or violence within 500 metres of the offices of Ola and Uber here.

'It's just not possible to make it on straight UberX rates, ' said Jim Conigliaro, the guild's founder.

"Uber is always striving to offer the best earning opportunity for drivers and we are constantly working to improve the driver experience", she said.

'They really need tips to make ends meet'.

Last month, Lyft announced that its in-app tipping option had hit the "milestone" of $200 million in driver gratuities.
