Kiper's 'Grade A' mock: Lions take Mixon in 2nd round

Charles Clay hasn't played up to the five-year deal he signed in 2015, and pass-catcher is a need. Who could the Eagles possibly select with their No. 14 overall pick?

In the last two decades of the NFL Draft, only 43 tight ends were selected among the top 50 picks, including just one apiece in the last two years. He's more accurate on short throws, specifically when in rhythm on three-step drops, and he avoids turnovers much better, throwing only nine interceptable passes throughout 2016 compared to Peterman's 12 in just six games. But he impressed at the Senior Bowl and maintained the momentum through the NFL Combine.

Often, Kiper's mock pushes quality players down the board, as it focuses on positions of need as opposed to the best player available.

Could go as high as: Late first round.

A guard in the third round is probably going to irritate people, but it shouldn't.

"You're sitting there as the New York Giants and you're saying, 'Can we wait to (the 87th pick) to try fill this void?' McShay said. I think...he (goes) in Round 2".

Other surprising names to see among Kiper's first three rounds: TCU offensive lineman Aviante Collins (No. 68 overall, Jacksonville Jaguars), North Carolina wide receiver Mack Collins (No. 83 overall, Tennessee Titans), Georgia wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie (No. 101 overall, Denver Broncos) and USC offensive lineman Zach Banner (No. 97 overall, Miami Dolphins). Some of the teams that could land Christian McCaffrey are the New Orleans Saints (No. 11), Indianapolis Colts (No. 15), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 19). But his special teams ability could be what forces National Football League teams to take a closer look.

The 49ers brought in QBs Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley this offseason, but it's clear that neither is the long-term answer. The transition from the Bear Raid will take time, as it has for former Cal star Jared Goff.

However, none carry the kind of impact of Mel Kiper Jr. "It's just the accuracy". I am guessing you have a strong feeling one way or another. In this scenario, I have the Jets passing on a quarterback at No. 6 - remember, I don't have Mitchell Trubisky as a top-20 prospect - and taking Watson with their second pick. He can definitely spin it.
