Thousands Commemorate ANZAC Day in Australia, New Zealand and Thailand

Hundreds of people from Australia and New Zealand gathered at the site of the Gallipoli campaign Tuesday for a dawn service marking the 102 anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) troop landings.

Although most of us will not take the bluster of North Korea too seriously, Anzac Day 2017 comes just days after the administration in Pyongyang threatened Australia with nuclear attack for "blindly and zealously toeing the U.S. line".

This year's theme for Anzac Day is "Service and Sacrifice", honouring not only the men who died for their country, but also the men who served, in any way, shape or form.

Fairfax journalist Jessica McInerney spoke with returned serviceman Ash Wilke to hear what Anzac Day means to him.

Both men said Anzac Day is a time of reflection and remembrance.

Regardless of warnings of possible terror attacks, huge crowds have turned out to commemorate and celebrate the contributions of veterans to Australia. Like the Anzacs, this communal celebration brings us together. Just Bundaberg Rum and black, instant coffee.

"Even now I get letters saying I'm doing a good job for a woman. It's a tradition that started in Gallipoli".

Thousands of people ran the length of Martin Place on the 90th anniversary of Sydney's first dawn service.

Cr Dobie served in the Australian Army at a time when women were not deployed to fight on the frontline.

"But I know that every Australian, whether they're here or back in Australia next year, will stop, pause and remember and reflect on the enormous sacrifice that was made on the Western Front on behalf of our nation".

"Many would receive their service medal through the mail, if at all and ultimately, they would not be formally welcomed home until 1996, 21 years after their return". "Everyone would salute and you'd carry that salute until the Hercules was out of sight".

Young Kiwis are increasingly anxious about whether they have the day off or not - many also took Monday off work to get a four-day weekend.

And for many younger Australians, whose imaginations struggle to comprehend the enormity of war and the experiences of ex-servicemen and women, some still aged in their teenage years, in a far different country we live in today than a century ago, "Lest we forget" has generally meant we simply can not forget their sacrifices and courage.

"So we could have choice".

"It is important that we thank the people that allowed us to have the country that we do", he said.

If thousands and thousands of people had not made the most very bad of sacrifices, maybe I wouldn't be able to have a posh coffee first thing or I wouldn't be able to live the life I have.
