Hot Switch sales boost Nintendo sales, trim quarterly loss

The company said it has sold 2.76 million copies of the new "Legend of Zelda" game for the Switch, leading to the unusual situation that a single piece of software outsold the console.

Nintendo said Thursday it has sold 2.74 million Switch machines and 5.46 million units of Switch software since sales began in March.

The same day the Switch went on sale, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as one of the console's first games.

A few minutes ago, Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki shared on his Twitter account the info Nintendo CEO repeatedly said that "more unannounced titles" are planned, which should boost Switch hardware sales. Pokémon Sun & Moon performed very strongly at the end of 2016, having now sold 15.4 million copies, which is closing in on Pokémon X&Y's 16.1 million sales, at which point it will be the best selling 3DS game.

As a result of strong Switch sales and smart financial investments, Nintendo's total profits skyrockted by 521%, and the company earned 102.5 billion yen ($922.5 million) in profits during FY 2017 (April 1, 2016 - March 31, 2017).

On the flipside, even after the fact that the Nintendo 3DS already had a good run and with its sales slightly plummeting due to the Switch's release, the fact that there are tons of games available for it can't be denied. According to Nintendo's latest earnings report for this fiscal year, the Switch is still selling like hotcakes.

The Switch has shipped around 2.17 million hardware units worldwide.

Nintendo's forecast continues to maintain a positive perspective, in marked contrast to its previous home console, the Wii U. In addition, there were relatively fewer offerings of downloadable content during this period, so digital sales were also down to a large extent on the same period a year ago.

How 1-2-Switch performed was not disclosed, but Nintendo added that the party game had been "generating buzz". The immensely popular handheld has sold 7.27 million units this fiscal year, an increase of 7 percent. They managed to flog 9.1 million more amiibo figures as well. "But there is a concern that the sales could slow down quickly like the short-lived boom of Wii-U".

For fiscal 2017, the Japanese company expects an operating profit of around 60 billion yen from 750 billion yen in revenue. Doing this will net you 20% off select Nintendo Switch games. We will release Splatoon 2 in July.
