For Mental Health Week, people in Nunavik, Nunavut want to raise awareness

"No one should feel ashamed of talking about mental health problems and we want to break the culture of silence around mental health in the workplace", said Tracey Orr, support services executive, who has spearheaded the society's efforts to tackle the issue. One in five children or youth in our city face a mental health challenge of some sort, according to Hull Services.

Coleman acknowledged increased demand, but said mental health care and prevention services were generally of high quality.

The People's Mental Health Report released last month by lobby group Action Station included the stories of 500 people, with just 7 per cent reporting positive experiences with the health system.

Much of that work will happen through the Government's "social investment" approach, which aims to use data to better identify where money should be spent, and if it makes enough difference.

There'll be more funding for primary care - to ensure people were able to get counselling sooner - in this month's Budget.

These Mental Health First Aid courses are made possible by a $40,000 grant received by Great Lakes Recovery Centers from the Superior Health Foundation to establish a Mental Health First Aid Initiative.

The 2017 Budget investment in mental health and addictions services is in addition to the approximately $3.7 billion that Ontario has invested annually in mental health and addictions services. But the fiscal support that's needed to ensure access to treatment have always been insufficient, she says.
