India to participate in Champions Trophy - BCCI

Holders India did not submit a squad for the one-day worldwide tournament by an April 25 deadline after the BCCI failed in a bid to halt a new revenue model being adopted by the ICC.

Earlier, India head coach Anil Kumble and skipper Virat Kohli said that the team is keen to participate in the tournament, which they won in 2013 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The BCCI had already delayed naming the India squad for the Champions Trophy, and there was talk of revoking the Members Participating Agreement (MPA), which governs participation in ICC events, as part of the fallout of the ICC meetings. "The All-India Senior Selection Meeting will be held tomorrow, May 8, in New Delhi to pick the team", the BCCI added.

At last month's ICC meetings, the BCCI was outvoted 13-1 in its bid to halt the revised deal which considerably slashes India's share from global events in the 2015-2023 cycle.

With the new revenue model getting the nod, BCCI will now have to do with what they have in the eight-year cycle.

"But I can confirm India's participation in the Champions Trophy", Khanna maintained.

"The SGM may be divided on whether to send the Indian team for the Champions Trophy but the CoA is sure about its priorities. We don't want to pursue any legal case and don't want a confrontational approach", said Shukla. Mid-day learns that most cricket officials except those from the south zone are on the same page as the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) where sending the team to defend their Champions Trophy crown is concerned.

"It is not in the interest of Indian cricket for BCCI to take any drastic step/measure which may result in breakdown of negotiations between BCCI, ICC and other cricket boards, especially since there is sufficient time between now and ICC conference to be held in June, 2017, for a negotiated outcome to be arrived at", the COA had said.
