2016's Top 10 most popular baby names released

2016's Top 10 most popular baby names released

According to Social Security, Emma and Noah are the most popular names in the United States. For boys, Alexander dropped to No. 11 and Elijah cracked the top 10 for the first time ever, at No. 9.

Though the top ten baby names haven't changed much in the past few years, names near the bottom of the list have much more dynamic, subject to the vicious tides of pop culture.

The Social Security Administration is able to share the ranking because parents provide children's names when they apply for Social Security cards.

The name Kehlani rose to number 872 from number 3,359 in 2015, while the name Kylo rose to number 902 from number 3,269 in 2015.

According to the Social Security Administration, the number of births in 2016 with name Donald was 621, which represented 0.031% of total male births in 2016.

Wattenberg's theory could be the reason why the name Caitlyn dropped entirely off the list. The most popular girl name for 2016 was one of the hottest names in 1880. She was nominated for a Grammy in 2016 for her album "You Should Be Here". Kylo Ren, the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia and the grandson of Darth Vader, was a character in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Names on the rise for girls included Kaylani (a variation Kehlani), Royalty, Saoirse, Ophelia and Alessia.

"Even parents who are huge Donald Trump supporters are unlikely to name their kid Donald", she added, though there were no major changes in the rankings of the names Donald or Hillary.

The most popular 21st century names for girls before 2014 were Sophia, Isabella and Emily.
