North Korea Claims To Test Missile That Can Carry Nuclear Warhead

The test was "aimed at verifying the tactical and technological specifications of the newly developed ballistic rocket capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead".

North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper devoted half of its six-page Monday edition to coverage of the missile test, with vivid color photographs of the launch and jubilant leader Kim Jong Un celebrating with military officers.

North Korea previously launched a ballistic missile from Kusong in February.

The country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the launch of the Hwasong-12 missile that reached an altitude of 2,111.5 kilometers (1,312 miles) and flew 787 kilometers (489 miles), KCNA said.

"The test firing of ICBMs will occur at any time and place, at the will of North Korea's highest leadership", Ji said. Each new nuclear and longer-range missile test is part of the North's attempt to build a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile.

Sunday's test is also the first from North Korea since South Korean President Moon Jae-in took office last week. "The president said we are leaving open the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, but we should sternly deal with a provocation to prevent North Korea from miscalculating".

"With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil. the president can not imagine that Russia is pleased", the statement said.

"That's not the full operational seamless capability that we want but it has an initial ability to be able to defeat North Korean missiles", he said.

"The test-firing of ICBMs will occur at any time and place, at the will of North Korea's highest leadership", North Korea's ambassador to China, Ji Jae Ryong, told reporters in Beijing on Monday, a day before the UN Security Council meets in NY to discuss the test.

"Now you're going to see the entire worldwide community isolate North Korea and let them know that this is not acceptable".

He said the missile's trajectory indicated the North was clearly testing the re-entry technology under flight environments that would be consistent for an ICBM.

Beijing has cited United Nations resolutions for all of its measures against North Korea. The report also stated America's mainland and operations in the Pacific region are in North Korea's "sighting range for a strike and that it has all-powerful means for a retaliatory strike".

There's also a political victory for North Korea.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it was sacked toward the east at around 5:30 AM local time from near Kusong in the northwestern province of Pyongan-pukdo.

The US said the missile was sacked from Kusong, a city which plays home to much of North Korea's military activity, including munitions factories and uranium mines.

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the missile launch, telling reporters during a visit to China that "there's nothing good about" it.

The North has made no secret of its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States - something President Donald Trump has vowed "won't happen".

The White House, in a statement, said North Korea has been "a flagrant menace for far too long". In a show of force, the United States sent an aircraft carrier strike group, led by the USS Carl Vinson, to waters off the Korean peninsula to conduct drills with South Korea and Japan.
