'Shadow Brokers' threaten to release more hacking tools in June

In the post, which will worry security agencies and companies around the world, the Shadow Brokers said: "In June, TheShadowBrokers is announcing "TheShadowBrokers Data Dump of the Month" service".

While the motives of the Shadow Brokers remains unknown, it claimed that it wasn't interested in the bug bounties paid by software firms for vulnerabilities found in their code or selling to "cyber thugs".

A spokesman for the group, which calls itself Shadow Brokers, claimed in a blog post on Tuesday that some of those computer bugs may be released on a monthly basis, as part of a new subscription-based business model that attempts to mimic what has proven successful for companies such as Spotify, Netflix, Blue Apron and many more. Yesterday at TechCrunch Disrupt, former NSA head General Keith Alexander defended the hoarding practice in the name of public safety, using wishy-washy logic.

"The ShadowBrokers is feeling like being very responsible party about Windows dump", Shadow Brokers wrote in the blog, in its usual weird dialect. Microsoft president and chief legal officer Brad Smith said earlier this week the WannaCry attack used elements stolen from NSA cyber warfare operations.

Microsoft did provide a patch for the vulnerability but a lot of machines were still exposed as they had not installed the updates. One of those exploits was used to create the notorious Wannacry ransomware that crippled hundreds of thousands of systems worldwide.

Imagine a loot box - but for security exploits. Yet, we could not and should not believe anything the group says only because they posted it on a blog.

The Shadow Brokers made the screenshots available in January.

Alternately, the Shadow Brokers appears to be giving the NSA or any other organization that has leaked cyber warfare kits to buy back the whole lot and avoid the release of the tools. There's little stopping people from unleashing new attacks that similarly repackage EternalBlue or possibly other unsafe exploits already released by Shadow Brokers. Microsoft took the unprecedented step of skipping Patch Tuesday in February and then released the SMB (Server Message Block) fix in March that was used by WannaCry and not dumped by the Shadow Brokers until April.

In a blog post written in its trademark broken English, the group said it has more so-called Ops Disks, which it says were also stolen from the NSA. What members doing with data after is up to members.

What is more interesting is the fact that one of the countries the group tried to sell data to is Korea, which puts the theory of North Korea being behind the WannaCry attacks under serious doubt.
