Netanyahu orders Cabinet to attend Trump arrival ceremony

"I will discuss with President Trump ways to strengthen even further the first and strongest alliance with the U.S.", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday ahead of his weekly Cabinet meeting.

His first stop will be the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built at the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. Tillerson referred to the visit as "a moment in time" and suggested that the USA would take a more active role in the future in brokering a deal if both sides make serious commitments.

Tomorrow, Donald Trump will become the sixth US president to visit Israel.

But earlier in the day on Sunday, Netanyahu told a large crowd that Jerusalem will always be the capital of Israel.

At first he appeared indifferent to the diplomatic orthodoxy of two states for two people between the West bank of the Jordan River and the Mediterranean.

"At the same time Israel is offering a gesture to Jewish settlements in the West Bank". Israel political figures and decision makers who initially praised Trump in messianic terms will find it hard to turn against him if he starts to demand Israeli compromises in the West Bank.

Israel regards the whole of Jerusalem as its capital, while the Palestinians claim the east as their capital.

The Wadi Hilweh Information Centre, based in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan, reported that clashes had erupted in the neighbourhood until late hours on Saturday night, when Israeli forces fired tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets into the community and detained 20-year-old Muhammad al-Abasi.

Trump's fierce pro-Israel stance has limits, and just like past USA presidents, Trump has his own agenda, Herzog suggested. I think this is the real test. National Security Advisor HR McMaster said Trump will "express his desire for dignity and self-determination for the Palestinians".

But as a businessman Mr Trump knows better than most that you can not do a deal if the parties involved don't want to talk turkey.

"Previous discussions about a Palestinian-Israeli settlement revolved around the exchange of only 1.9 percent of the lands, but now we are talking about more than triple that amount", he noted.

Trump's remark during that news conference is the clearest statement of policy on the issue from the administration to date.

He will meet Israel's Prime Minister Benjain Netanyahu later on the same day at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem.

In her remarks, Livni stressed her support to the two-state solution to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, saying that despite reasons to be sceptic and several hard issues, there are reasons for optimism.

MARTIN: Can you give us a sense of what each side hopes to get out of this visit?

"It is something that I think is frankly maybe not as hard as people have thought over the years", Trump said when meeting Abbas in Washington earlier this month.

Will he commit to the two-state solution?

They wanted to avoid sending a signal that the US recognizes Israeli sovereignty in that very sensitive spot.

At the same time, he urged Israel to hold back on settlement building in the West Bank, a longstanding concern of Palestinians and much of the world.

"Mr. President", he said, "We look forward to your visit".

The US president has been widely seen as considerably more supportive of Israel than his predecessor, Barack Obama. Senior administration and White House officials will arrive together with them.

Now the president has said he wants to help make the ultimate deal, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
