1 killed, dozens injured in caste violence in northern India

The development comes after the recent violence involving Dalits and Thakurs in Saharanpur during the birth anniversary celebrations of B. R. Ambedkar, as per sources.

One person was killed and four others were injured as fresh violence erupted in Saharanpur which has been witnessing inter-caste clashes since April.

He claimed that though hundreds of upper caste youth have been involved in clashes against Dalits, only 32 have been arrested so far. The intervention of the police prevented a flare-up at the time. The ensuing clashes led to the killing of a Dalit man from a bullet wound.

"With Yogi Adityanath, a Thakur, at the helm of the government, members of his community are asserting their authority". When the group was returning from the meeting, it was attacked by assailants carrying sharp-edged weapons near Chandpur village, according to DNA.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sent a team of officials led by Home Secretary Mani Prasad Mishra to Saharanpur.

Following a fresh bout of violence in Saharanpur, the Uttar Pradesh government has sacked Senior Superintendent of Police SC Dubey and District Magistrate Nagendar Parsad Singh. In the ensuing conflict, a 35-year-old Thakur man of injuries after being pelted with stones and 16 people, including a head constable of the police, were injured. Senior state government officials are campaigning in the area.

A compensation of Rs 50,000 has been announced for those injured in the violence. "Peace had been restored in Saharanpur but the former chief minister's visit led to tension followed by the unfortunate incident where one person has died".

On Tuesday, one Dalit man was killed and several injured in a clash between Dalits and Rajputs.

This is not the first instance of violence in the region. She met Dalits who lost their homes in the earlier attack.

Following this, around 25 houses belonging to Dalits were torched. The Dalits are demanding their constitutional rights but the "casteist forces in the BJP and RSS" are out to crush them, she said.

"The UP government has to implement the Atrocities Act in letter and spirit and create confidence in Dalits that law will protect them", he said.

Thousands of activists had swarmed Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Sunday to protest against atrocities on Dalits in Saharanpur.
