Man armed with guns, ammunition arrested at Phoenix Comicon

Police say the man was inside the Phoenix Convention Center and struggled with officers before he was detained. Police said he was wearing body armor. This had lead to increased security checks and a ban being placed on all prop weapons for the remainder of the convention.

Police also say in a probable-cause statement released Friday that officers took Mathew Enrique Nava Sterling into custody at the Phoenix Convention Center after somebody contacted Hawthorne, California, police to report that Sterling was posting threats on Facebook about killing police officers at the Comicon event.

Phoenix Police Department said the threats indicated he allegedly meant to target a Phoenix Comicon performer and police officers.

Phoenix police declined to comment on security arrangements. The police took him away from the venue and was questioned at police headquarters. Multiple officers were necessary to subdue the armed man. Police said no prop weapons will be allowed at the event, which began Thursday.

According to police, the man also made threats against authorities on social media prior to the incident.

"As an added precaution, weapons of any kinds - including simulated, replica or toy weapons - will not be permitted into the venue", Fortune added.

"Expect some delays throughout the weekend", Phoenix Police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said during a press conference.

The man, who was not identified by police, is now at police headquarters with detectives.
