Rahul Gandhi fails to get nod for Saharanpur visit

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, has been denied permission to visit Saharanpur, is today visiting the violence-hit district.

Earlier, former union minister Kumari Shailja and senior Congress leader P.L. Punia were denied permission to visit Saharanpur. Every person is taking law in his own hands and running the law and order in the state. "It will be better for Rahul Gandhi choose to visit the place once the situation is cooled off and balanced", Prakash told ANI. Putting an end to all criticism on his handling of the Saharanpur clashes, Rahul Gandhi is now expected to meet affected Dalit families.

"The district administration denied permission, but Rahul Gandhi will come to Saharanpur tomorrow".

The recent spate of caste-based violence was a well-planned conspiracy and those responsible will not be spared, Uttar Pradesh's principal home secretary, Mani Prasad Mishra, said on Friday.

On Thursday, the Centre sought a report from the UP government on the continuing violence in Saharanpur.

He said, "Be it the Greater- Noida Highway rape and murder case, or the Rampur incident, Saharanpur, Muzzafarpur or other numerous incidents, it proves how unsafe the place has become for women and minorities".

Saharanpur has made headlines through the month for brutality against lower caste members, especially Dalits.

Gandhi will visit Saharanpur to take stock of the prevailing situation, where a caste conflict had erupted in which many Dalits were allegedly targeted.

Together with the violence in Saharanpur, these incidents have caused a further strain in the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) relations with the Dalits, which suffered a major setback when a bright Dalit scholar, Rohith Vemula, committed suicide in Hyderabad central university in January previous year following skirmishes between his group, the Ambedkar Students' Association, and the BJP's student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The clash started because police stopped the Maharana Pratap procession after Dalits complained.

Taking note of the violence in Saharanpur, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday suspended the superintendent of police (SSP) and district magistrate (DM) posted there while transferring the divisional commissioner and the deputy inspector general (DIG).
