GOP rep: Alleged Montana assault 'unacceptable,' but voters have spoken

With that context, is it really surprising that Gianforte ended up winning Montana's special election anyway?

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin answers questions Thursday, May 25, 2017, at a Bozeman, Mont., press conference about Montana congressional candidate Greg Gianforte's misdemeanor assault charge.

Liberals on social media reacted to the news that Gianforte won despite being charged with assault. The altercation occurred when Jacobs tried to ask Gianforte about the CBO score of the Republicans' health care bill. "Last night, I learned a lesson", he said. "I took an action I can't take back and I am not proud of what happened". Mr. Gianforte faced Democrat Rob Quist in the race to see who will succeed Republican Congressman Ryan Zinke's at-large seat; Mr. Zinke became President Trump's secretary of the interior.

Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign to buy Ben Jacobs a new pair of glasses after Wednesday's incident quickly hit its target of $800 - with the additional money raised set to be donated to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The altercation didn't stop him from capturing 50 percent of the vote against opponent Rob Quist's 44 percent, according to the most recent tally from Decision Desk HQ, a favorable result that hardly seemed in doubt after nearly two-thirds of the ballots were cast in early voting in the GOP-friendly state. Almost 260,000 voters had cast their ballots in early voting before the incident took place.

"Great win in Montana", President Donald Trump said Friday as he attended the G-7 summit in Italy.

Look no further than the state's governor, Steve Bullock-one of the nation's most popular state executives and the man who defeated Gianforte to win re-election in 2016. The Republican candidate canceled television interviews and stayed out of sight while the polls were open Thursday.

"When you make a mistake, you have to own up to it", Politico reports Gianforte saying at a victory party.

Even if he were found guilty and served the maximum sentence-six months in Montana-Gianforte could still serve in Congress. "Now he needs to resolve his legal issue so that he can start off on the right foot serving his constituents", Stivers said. "Regardless of what happens next, we will be competing hard for this seat in 2018". Montana voters didn't pass judgment on initial allegations.

Gianforte was later charged with misdemeanor assault, which will not prevent him from being seated in the House even if he is convicted.

"We like to win, don't get me wrong". Democratic candidate Quist received 93.7% of Hillary Clinton's November vote total. A supporter of Vermont Sen. "Democrats who have won statewide in Montana tend to be moderate, and Quist is no moderate".

But Republicans rapidly mounted a wilting attack on the airwaves over Quist's financial troubles, including a history of unpaid taxes and liens. "Greg Gianforte should not be sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives while his assault case is still pending in court".

Gianforte: Get the h*** out of here. Colbert complimented Jacobs for his good reporting of "narrating his own body-slam".

Republicans were also reluctant to put too much meaning into the Montana outcome, given the particular circumstances of that race.
