South Korea fires at North 'object'

South Korea's military on Tuesday fired at an unidentified object that flew across the heavily militarized border that separates the country from its rival North Korea. North Korea has so far defied worldwide pressures and conducted two more ballistic missile tests in the past two weeks.

"On the basis of not violating the relevant (Security Council) resolutions, China maintains normal business and trade ties with the DPRK", foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters, using the initials of North Korea's official name.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are running particularly high as North Korea continues making threats and launching missiles at an increased frequency.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the series of tests are "disturbing".

North Korea has since carried out five nuclear tests and dozens of missile tests as it seeks to develop a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the United States.

April was the first full month of the ban, and saw 227,811 Chinese tourists visiting South Korea, down 66.6% on the 682,318 a year earlier, according to the state-run Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO).

SOUTH Korea has fired into North Korea after an "unidentified object" was sent towards the country.

On Monday, Russian and Chinese deputy foreign ministers, Igor Morgulov and Kong Xuanyou, expressed concern over disproportionate U.S. military activities on the Korean peninsula and deployment of the THAAD missile defense systems in South Korea. North Korea has accused the US of escalating tensions with its actions and refers to its missile launches as measures to safeguard its country.

Seoul military officials initially suggested the item was a drone from North following the incident on Tuesday, before saying Wednesday that balloons carrying propaganda leaflets had blown in across the frontier, one of the most fortified locations in the world.

The South Korean military was initially unable to determine what the objects were because of heavy cloud cover and rainfall.

The North has been open about its plans to develop a missile capable of striking the United States and has ignored calls to halt its weapons program, maintaining that it is necessary to counter USA aggression.

In 2013, state media said North Korean leader Kim watched a drone attack drill on a simulated South Korean target.

North Korea's recent missile tests were a legitimate act of self-defense by a "fully-fledged nuclear power", North Korean diplomat Ju Yong Chol told the U.N. Conference on Disarmament in Geneva on Tuesday.

However, imposing sanctions on Chinese enterprises may provoke a backlash from the Chinese government, leading to a situation in which China ceases to cooperate on North Korean issues.
