To many Americans, Memorial Day has lost its meaning

That image will forever become what he associates with Memorial Day.

"So many times they said we have Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day and this was the day that makes us remember the fallen that have scarified that have had the ultimate sacrifice for us", Mullins said.

Memorial Day may be considered the official start of summer where pools, manicured lawns, fire pits and grills are signs of the times. By the late 1860s in many cities tributes to fallen soldiers were being held.

"A man's country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers, and woods, but it is a principle and patriotism is loyalty to that principle". Millions of Americans visit cemeteries, decorate graves with flags and flowers, tell stories, attend worship services, and parades.

In America, this should not just be another day.

For example, if people were to walk through the cemetery section reserved for Americans who died while serving in the military, they could see a certain grave marker with a young man's name on it.

This year's theme for Charlottesville's Memorial Day ceremony highlights the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. While your friends and family should be a part of that experience, we shouldn't ignore the men and women who valiantly gave their lives in defense of our country.

In 2000, Congress approved the National Moment of Remembrance Act, which encourages all Americans to pause for one minute, wherever they are, at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day and think of those who died in service to our country.

There is some confusion with Memorial Day, and other holidays and observed days.

Many of you are likely enjoying a day at the beach or relaxing during this national holiday off.

Veterans groups say a growing military-civilian disconnect contributes to a feeling that Memorial Day has been overshadowed.

Throughout Memorial Day weekend your social media feeds will be filled with comments of people thanking veterans for their service, and while that's nice it's not the reason for this federal holiday. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to raise up their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.
