Trump abandoning global climate pact? Decision 'very soon'

Washington insiders said on May 31 that Trump is likely to pull out of the landmark 2015 Paris accord signed by 195 nations, further straining relations with many USA allies and leaving the United States alongside Syria and Nicaragua as the only nations not participating.

At the summit, leaders expressed dismay at Trump's climate stance.

Trump's chief economic adviser, Gary Cohn, has discussed the possibility of changing the USA carbon reduction targets instead of pulling out of the deal completely.

Trump said he'd been "hearing from a lot of people, both ways".

Former President Barack Obama signed the global deal a year ago, committing the U.S.to a significant reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Russian Federation also said it would stick to its climate commitments, but said the Paris agreement would be affected by a U.S. pullout.

China, the number one producer of greenhouse gases, is burning close to half of the world's coal supply each year.

The United States under former President Barack Obama's administration had committed to reduce its emissions by 26 to 28 percent from 2005 levels by 2025.

New Mexico's two USA senators - Democrats Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich - both supported the US joining the Paris Agreement in 2015, and both senators said Tuesday that they would strongly oppose Trump's decision to withdraw from it.

He said withdrawing from the accord for the United States won't be easy and will take years. "It looks like that attempt failed", Juncker said.

"By succumbing to pressure from administrator Scott Pruitt and other advisors, President Trump is ceding the future to the Germans, the Chinese, the Indians, and other nations rather than having the United States continue to lead the world on clean energy solutions", said Democrat Ed Markey. "We are moving forward with our plans to increase the use of renewable energy while reducing coal-fired generation, which is driven by economics and market forces".

Paris Agreement also aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with climate change impact, and at "making finance flows consistent with a low GHG (Green House Gas) emissions and climate-resilient pathway".

After taking office, Trump faced pressure to stay in the deal from investors, global powers and business leaders, including some in the coal industry.

American corporate leaders have also appealed to the businessman-turned-president to stay in the pact.

Asked what he'd do if the president walked away from the climate deal, Musk tweeted that he'd leave the councils on which he serves.

Musk has defended his decision to stick with Trump, saying White House access would give him greater influence on policy.

Since he took office, in January, the Trump Administration has found some internal opposition to the decision to withdraw from the Paris deal.

China is the top emitter of man-made carbon dioxide emissions, and the United States is second.

In a tweet to Donald Trump, European Council President Donald Tusk said: "Please don't change the (political) climate for the worse".

Mr Musk, who has also faced criticism for working with Mr Trump, stated in February that his participation "does not mean that I agree with actions by the Administration".

Trump claimed before taking office that climate change was a "hoax" created by the Chinese to hurt the US economy, an assertion that stands in defiance of broad scientific consensus.
