Girl's soccer team disqualified after tournament organizers say she looks like boy

"It's what she likes", Gerardo Hernandez said".

The family says Mili Hernandez's team was disqualified because organizers thought she was a boy.

However, that fateful choice disqualified Mili and her team, Omaha's Azzuri Cachorros girls club, from playing in the Springfield Soccer Club girls tournament because the organizers believed Mili was a boy.

Except the team set to face hers at the tournament chose to go for some major league baloney, and asked Hernandez's team to be disqualified because they believed she was a boy.

The situation started when someone - it's unclear who - told the tournament organizers on Saturday that a boy was playing on a girls' team, said Bill Bianco, attorney for the Southern Sarpy Activities Program, which organizes the tournament. "It's what she always wants to do - play soccer". "I didn't like my hair long", Hernandez told WOWT 6 News.

Mili, whose skill pushed her up three age groups within the club, said she keeps her hair short because she prefers it that way.

But on Sunday, before taking the field, Mili and her team were suddenly disqualified.

Even though Mili has a good attitude about what happened to her, it's still infuriating.

"They didn't want to listen", said her brother, Cruz Hernandez.

Springfield Soccer Club organizers would not comment, but did say Mili's family can appeal the ruling to the Nebraska State Soccer Association. On the WOWT Facebook page, hundreds of people chimed in to express their frustration and school this soccer club on the fact that, yes, girls can have short hair too. By Monday she was back to dribbling a soccer ball and obsessing about her favorite team, Guadalajara's Chivas. Not just at the mistake that made his daughter cry, he said, but at officials' unwillingness to hear him out.
