Secret NSA doc details Russian election hacking effort

The Department of Justice on Monday announced that it had filed charges against a government contractor named Reality Winner for providing a news outlet with a classified document.

Most significantly, as CNN reported at the time, and The Intercept also reports Monday based on the this document, that there is still no evidence any votes were affected by Russian hacking. "The Intercept has no knowledge of the identity of the source", Siu said.

The picture showed the document had a particular fold in the paper, which officials concluded were able to trace back to a specific printed version of the document. Authorities zeroed in on victor because she was the only one who had been in email contact with the news organisation, according to the affidavit.

A U.S. official confirmed to CNN that The Intercept's document is a genuine, classified NSA document.

"Exceptional law enforcement efforts allowed us quickly to identify and arrest the defendant", said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein earlier today. But it is "unknown whether the aforementioned spear-phishing deployment successfully compromised all the intended victims, and what potential data from the victim could have been exfiltrated", the NSA report said.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said fast work allowed authorities quickly to identify and arrest victor. Releasing classified material without authorisation threatens our nation's security and undermines public faith in government.

They had been given a "cyber espionage mandate specifically directed at USA and foreign elections", the report says.

While the complaint doesn't definitively outline how much the alleged cyberattack affected the outcome of the USA election, the document is, in the words of The Intercept, "the most detailed United States. government account of Russian interference in the election that has yet come to light". "People who are trusted with classified information and pledge to protect it must be held accountable when they violate that obligation", he said. USA intelligence officials then asked The Intercept to redact certain sections.

"My client has no (criminal) history, so it's not as if she has a pattern of having done anything like this before", Nichols said in a phone interview Monday.

In affidavits filed with the court, Garrick of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said the government was notified of the leaked report by the news outlet that received it.

The FBI and several congressional committees are investigating how Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election and whether associated of President Donald Trump may have colluded with Russian intelligence operatives during the campaign.

Garrick's affidavit said he interviewed victor at her home Saturday and she "admitted intentionally identifying and printing the classified intelligence reporting at issue" and mailing it to the news outlet.

Asked if victor had confessed, Nichols said, "If there is a confession, the government has not shown it to me".
