Nebraska soccer association apologizes to girl

Former U.S. women's national team stars Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm have reached out to 8-year-old Mili Hernandez after hearing of her disqualification from a tournament in Nebraska because organizers thought she was a boy.

The situation started when someone - it's unclear who - told tournament organizers Saturday that a boy was playing on a girls team, said Bill Bianco, attorney for the Southern Sarpy Activities Program, which organized the tournament.

Hernandez said of the tournament organizers: "They just weren't listening".

Hernandez even showed tournament officials his daughter's health insurance card in an effort to prove her gender, but they refused to accept it. Coach Mario Torres told KMTV-TV in Omaha that he received a call from tournament organizers the morning of the game informing him that the team couldn't play because one of the players, Hernandez, was listed on the roster as a boy.

Wambach's one-time national team colleague and fellow USA legend Mia Hamm also invited Hernandez to one of her soccer camps.

Gerardo Hernandez, Mili's father, told WOWT that the decision shocked his daughter.

"Nebraska State Soccer would never disqualify a player from participating on a girl's teams based on appearance", Mann stated.

"They just said that the president who runs the whole tournament said she was a boy and that was final, there was nothing else that could be done about it", he said.

Mili Hernandez helped her team get to the Springfield Soccer Club girls tournament this weekend.

"They only did it because I look like a boy", Mili told WOWT News. They made it to the finals on Sunday before the club disqualified them.

Hernandez now has paid a heavy price for keeping her hair short.

The state association said it did not oversee the Springfield tournament, but that it will work directly with clubs and tournament officials to ensure nothing like this happens again.

"We had a doctor's physical form and it gave a description and it said her age and female, so we showed them that but they wouldn't look at it", Mili's brother Cruz Hernandez told WOWT. The girl wears her hair cut short. Wambach said she won championships with short hair.

He said Mili, who is from Omaha and will be in third grade in the fall, has played soccer for three years.
