Levine: Chris Sale-Jose Quintana Showdown Turns Into Dud

Light-hitting Deven Marrero belted a pair of home runs and had five RBIs to help Chris Sale escape with a victory in his return to Chicago as the Boston Red Sox went deep six times and outslugged the White Sox 13-7 on Tuesday night.

Sale will be opposing Chicago for the first time in his eight-year career.

After eight relief outings, David Holmberg will make his first start for the White Sox on Memorial Day. And while the Sox do have a lot to be proud of, some things haven't gone the way they envisioned heading into the 2017 season.

The left-hander received a warm welcome in his return to Chicago following his trade to Boston last winter.

Sale pitched a season-low five innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits - both season highs - before he was replaced by reliever Heath Hembree in the sixth inning. "Tonight, for me, it was a little embarrassing with my teammates". For me to be able to walk out of this building with my chin up in a good mood, good spirits, music playing in the locker room after the game, I had nothing to do with that. He walked back-to-back batters. However, the Red Sox struggled out of the gates and while they have played better of late they still trailed the New York Yankees by three games for top spot in the AL East heading in to this week.

"Amazing", said center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr., who had one of the Red Sox's six homers, the most they've hit in a game since September 4, 2013, when they blasted eight against the Detroit Tigers.

Manager John Farrell said the ballpark "played extremely small". "So we're grateful he's in our uniform".

"I had a bad night, I really did", Sale said. "It will be a different feeling watching him go against me after the last four years when he was my teammate". We talked last night.

The Red Sox rank 13 in the majors in runs scored this season but the consensus is that they can still be better. He made his major league debut that same season, pitching out of the bullpen down the stretch. He has 60 strikeouts in 61.2 innings of work this year and a WHIP of 1.30.

White Sox right-hander David Robertson finished the game with a ideal ninth inning.

In one of the more weird incidents in recent White Sox history, Sale didn't want to pitch in the uniforms because he found them uncomfortable and so he cut up all of his teammates' jerseys in a dispute with management.

Red Sox: The Red Sox placed 2B Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained left wrist and activated 3B Pablo Sandoval from the DL on Tuesday.

For the rebuilding White Sox, in the final year of his contract, Cabrera is a prime candidate to be traded and he's in the midst of a nice hot streak. They pried away the Red Sox's No. 1 prospect (infielder Yoan Moncada) and top pitching hopeful (right-hander Michael Kopech) among a package of four minor leaguers.

"Can't change the past, just try to become better in the future", Sale said.

"More so than anything, I just want to let everyone know that I appreciated my time here", he said. More times than not, it was great here, and I appreciated it.

"I wasn't smiling a whole lot tonight, that's for sure". However, if anyone can keep his emotions in check, it's probably Sale.
