Trump Breaks Welcome Twitter Hiatus, Finally Comments On Comey Testimony

Trump said he would be happy to testify under oath that he had not told Comey he expected loyalty from him, and had not pressed Comey to end the FBI's investigation of former National Security advisor Michael Flynn.

The U.S. House Intelligence Committee leaders sent a letter to the White House today, asking if any tape recordings exist of conversations between ousted FBI Director James Comey and President Donald Trump.

The President later said he would "100%" be willing to testify under oath.

Trump was appearing at the White House with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

A defiant Donald Trump went back on the attack after sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey's explosive Senate testimony - with the president's lawyer suggesting the witness lied under oath and could be investigated for leaking "privileged information".

"There's no doubt that I was sacked because of the Russia investigation", Comey told lawmakers, referring to the widening probe of Russian influence on last year's USA presidential election.

The brief news conference, where each President took two questions from the press.

Painting a devastating picture of an untrustworthy president, Comey admitted he asked a friend to leak those notes to a reporter, betting - correctly - that the details would prompt the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee in a hearing that the Trump administration had offered "shifting explanations" for his firing, which was confusing and concerning. Mr Trump wrote in an early morning tweet on Friday, the day after the Senate hearing.

The tweet broke a mysterious period of silence on social media for the President, who until then had not tweeted since June 7.

During the news conference on Friday, ABC News' Jonathan Karl asked Trump to clarify his response to Comey's testimony. "I was talking about matters that touch on the FBI's core responsibility and that related to the president-elect personally", Comey said.

Senator Tim Kaine, the 2016 Democratic Vice Presidential candidate, said Mr Comey's testimony provided a wealth of information for both the congressional and special counsel investigations. Trump asked, though he went on to say such a request wouldn't have been inappropriate.

The tweet from Trump about Comey claiming total vindication was a milestone for the president in one way: It ended Trump's second-longest tweet drought since he became a presidential candidate, falling just three minutes shy of the all-time mark. Trump said "no" when asked if he demanded a loyalty pledge from Comey.
