Corbyn claims victory after result enhances his reputation

A very personalized, nearly presidential style of campaigning has contributed to the Conservative Party's loss of support, said Mark Goodwin, lecturer at the department of political science and worldwide studies at the University of Birmingham in England.

But he wrote on the ConservativeHome website: "The reason for the disappointing result was not the absence of support for Theresa May and the Conservatives but an unexpected surge in support for Labour".

"Politics is not going back into the box where it was before", he said.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May's ruling Conservative Party has failed to win an overall majority in parliament, and the country is now set for a hung parliament.

With one result to come Friday, the Conservatives had 318 seats, Labour 261, the Scottish National Party 35 and the Liberal Democrats 14. The main opposition Labour Party took 262.

A party spokesman confirmed the resignation of Hill, a combative character who one former colleague said had helped create a "toxic" atmosphere at the heart of the government. Her weakened position in the party rules out big changes, and May's office has said that the most senior Cabinet members - including Treasury chief Philip Hammond, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd - will keep their jobs, but she is expected to shuffle the lower ranks of ministers. But she was forced into an alliance with a small party in Northern Ireland just to stay in power.

DUP has fought to maintain tight restrictions on abortion and opposes gay marriage.

Both were skilfully exploited by Corbyn, who also found the upper hand after two terror attacks threw the spotlight on May s record in her former job as interior minister.

I think if we'd had a large Conservative majority like all the polling was pointing to, then Theresa May could've pushed through her version of Brexit.

In this United Kingdom election the Green Party won one electorate in England, so has one seat in Parliament. "I would have thought that's enough to go, actually, and make way for a government that will be truly representative of all of the people of this country". May's political career is over, her authority as prime minister destroyed and everyone in Westminster knows it is only a matter of time before she steps down. The misconceived Brexit referendum has broken the hold of the Conservative party, and though Theresa May will still be able to form a coalition government, most pundits agree that May ran a poor campaign while Jeremy Corbyn surpassed expectations.

Instead, the result has sown confusion and division in British ranks, just days before negotiations are due to start on June 19.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has urged her to resign and allow him to form a minority administration, declaring: "We are ready to serve this country".

"It is not the outcome any of us would have wanted in the Conservative Party".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she assumed Britain still wanted to leave the European Union and talks should start quickly.

If she is to succeed in delivering the wishes of 52 percent of the public and take Britain out of the European Union, she must find a way to secure the full support of her party to pass legislation preparing for and enacting the departure. May's collapse in the polls and the Tory loss of its previous majority has now given the hard-left Corbyn a new lease on life, and he will doubtless contest the next election in hopes of becoming the first Labour leader not named Tony Blair to win an election since Harold Wilson in 1974.
