United States soldiers killed, 1 wounded in Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon

Afghan officials said that a us airstrike on a border outpost in southern Helmand province killed two border police officers and wounded six others late Friday or early Saturday.

Two US soldiers have been killed after an Afghan army soldier opened fire on them in eastern Afghanistan, an official says.

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and two others wounded in an attack by an Afghan soldier, a spokesperson for an Afghan governor said. Its spokesman Zabihullah Kujahid said online that the solider had been an "infiltrator" who had killed four American soldiers.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in Kabul declined to immediately comment on the killings, saying only that they were aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan.

President Trump is monitoring the situation, a White House spokesman said.

In March, three USA soldiers were injured in Helmand Province after being fired upon by an Afghan soldier.

Omar Zawak, spokesman for the governor of Helmand, said the deaths occurred when a U.S. aircraft fired on Afghan police, the statement said.

There are some 8,400 US troops stationed in Afghanistan.

Afghan authorities April 15 reported a jump in fatalities from the American military's largest non-nuclear bomb, declaring some 90 Islamic State fighters dead, as US-led forces conducted clean-up operations over their mountain hideouts.

USA and Afghan troops have been battling militants in the Nangarhar province for months. "The president and I have been briefed; the details of this attack will be forthcoming".

The shooter in Saturday's incident was believed to be a member of the Afghan military, the USA official said.

Air raids by USA fighter jets have sharply increased in recent months, just as the White House considers requests from military commanders to send thousands more troops to Afghanistan.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these American heroes", he said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

USA troops in Afghanistan number about 8,400 today, and there are another 5,000 from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

"On my way here I was informed that US servicemembers were killed and wounded in an attack in Afghanistan", Pence said.

The operations are being conducted in coordination with the United States forces based in Afghanistan who are mainly carrying out airstrikes as part of a broader role granted to them by the Obama administration past year. Around 2,000 of them are involved in counterterrorism operations.
