Theresa May's two closest aides quit after election debacle

"[The Conservative campaign] failed to notice the surge in Labour support, because modern campaigning techniques require ever-narrower targeting of specific voters, and we were not talking to the people who made a decision to vote for Labour".

Amid reports that senior Tories were sounding out potential replacements for Mrs May, prominent Conservative MP Heidi Allen said the Prime Minister had six months at most left in Downing Street.

Although he admitted that the general election was a "huge disappointment", Mr Timothy tried to put a positive spin on the result, saying: "The Conservatives won more than 13.6 million votes, which is an historically high number, and more than Tony Blair won in all three of his election victories".

In a resignation statement on the ConservativeHome website, Mr Timothy acknowledged one of his regrets was the way Mrs May's social care policy, dubbed the "dementia tax" by critics, had been handled.

May, however, has indicated she will not step down, calling for "stability" after the election.

A Tory spokesman confirmed Hill had resigned. "I take responsibility for my part in this election campaign, which was the oversight of our policy programme".

Writing in The Times she said: "Mrs May condoned their behaviour and turned a blind eye or didn't understand how destructive they both were".

"But I would like to make clear that the weird media reports about my own role in the policy s inclusion are wrong: it had been the subject of many months of work within Whitehall, and it was not my personal pet project".

Speaking on Friday, the prime minister said her party had a "strong relationship" with the DUP and that she meant to form a government which could "provide certainty and lead Britain forward at this critical time for our country".

May said she meant to stay as the Prime Minister and sought support from the Democratic Unionists to form a government.

"The prime minister called the election because she wanted a mandate", Corbyn told The Guardian.

"I take responsibility for my part in this election campaign".

The Conservative Party failed to reach the halfway mark of 326 seats to form government in Britain after snap general election were held on Thursday and will now need support from other parties to reach the halfway mark of 326 in the 650-seat House of Commons.

"I want to place on record my sorrow for the Conservative Members of Parliament who lost their seats, several of whom are close friends".

May's courting of DUP has triggered criticism in the media and among members of her party, who have described DUP as anti-abortionist and regressive on LGBTI rights.

The leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Ruth Davidson, tweeted a link to a speech she had made about same-sex marriage - something the DUP opposes.

"I will now form a government", May said Friday after meeting with the queen.

"They really only know one way to operate and that's to have enemies and I'm sure I'm one of those this morning".

"Trying to make that change to Number 10 was more hard than she possibly anticipated".
