Tottering Theresa May names new UK Cabinet as critics circle

May's office said Saturday principles of an agreement had been reached, but the two sides later clarified that they are still talking.

He added that the party had no choice but to strike a deal with the DUP, despite the party's attitudes to social issues such including LGBT rights and abortion laws. The Opposition Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has also said that his party is waiting in the wings to take charge after he defied pollsters' predictions by gaining 30 seats in Thursday's election, leaving a hung Parliament.

"I think its quite possible there'll be an election later this year or early next year, and that might be a good thing, because we can not go on with a period of great instability", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr on Sunday.

With the new government set to present its legislative program to parliament on June 19, the clock is ticking on efforts to bolster the Conservatives' position after they won just 318 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.

The talks were in line with Mrs Foster's "commitment to explore how we might bring stability to the nation at this time of great challenge", her party said in a statement.

Mr McDonnell said Labour should "draw on upon all the talents" when it considered its new frontbench although he also gave praise to the existing shadow cabinet. "It's just how long she's going to remain on death row", George Osborne, a former Conservative chancellor, tells the BBC.

Foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who is touted as the favourite to replace May should she be forced out, called on colleagues to rally behind her.

But Osborne, who is now the editor of London's Evening Standard newspaper, downplayed the prospect.

"They have once again betrayed the interests of the people of the north by supporting a Tory party which has cut funding to our public services year on year to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds".

On Brexit, the DUP supports leaving the European Union but opposes a return to a "hard" border with Ireland - which could happen if May carries through her threat to walk away from the talks rather than accept a "bad deal". A latest YouGov poll for "The Sunday Times" revealed that voters, by a margin of 48 per cent to 38 per cent, believe the Prime Minister should resign and for the first time Corbyn has drawn level with May on the question of who would be the best Prime Minister. Conservative MPs are publicly airing their anger, some calling for her ouster and others demanding radical change in her style of leadership.

Nicky Morgan, a senior Conservative legislator, said she would oppose a formal coalition pact with the ultra-conservative DUP for fear it would force the party to water down the Conservatives' "equalities policies".

"I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal or scoping deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescission of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom, in Great Britain, and that we would use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland", said the MP, who is a lesbian. "I think we'll know very shortly".

After reports came out that President Donald Trump postponed his visit to Britain out of fear of large-scale protests Corbyn expressed on Twitter that he was happy to hear the news.

May's office said Saturday that the Democratic Unionist Party, which has 10 seats in Parliament, had agreed to a "confidence and supply" arrangement with the government.

While some members of her party have said she will have to go eventually, May is expected to stay on as Prime Minister at least for now.

However, the former London Mayor has dismissed the claims as "tripe".
