United Kingdom defence minister Michael Fallon says government views on Brexit haven't changed

In all, 2,865 Britons were granted German citizenship in 2016 - a 361 percent increase over the previous year.

Defence Minister Michael Fallon said he believed there was a majority in parliament for this Brexit plan.

A record number of Britons became German citizens a year ago after Britain voted to quit the European Union, Germanys federal statistics office said.

Many Britons are concerned a hard Brexit will leave them outside the EU's single market and cherished free movement within the bloc. And since it takes several months to complete the application process, Brits who applied after the Brexit referendum last June may not get their passports until this year, suggesting another big jump in naturalizations in 2017.

Foreigners can apply for German citizenship after eight years of residence.

Almost 60 percent of new German citizens had their origins in Europe, with 29 percent thereof arriving from within the EU.

The largest group of people taking up German citizenship came from Turkey, although the total of 16,290 was down 17.3% from a year ago.

The second largest national group, Poles, recorded an increase of 11.3 per cent to reach 6,632. European Union and Swiss nationals are allowed to become German citizens and keep their other passports, but everybody else has to satisfy certain criteria-not applicable to many Brits-or else be forced to renounce their previous citizenship in favor of becoming German.
