Minecraft is now available for cross-play on any device

For the first time ever, Minecraft is going to be available to play cross-platform between PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch players.

The changes, bundled in the so-called Better Together Update, will unify console, mobile, and Windows 10 versions of Minecraft, a surely massive change-up for fans of the popular sandbox title. "It will be anywhere that you can play Minecraft in the new version", Egbert said.

Once the update - referred to as the Better Together Update - has been rolled out worldwide, the sandbox adventure will simply become known as "Minecraft" across all platforms. On top of the free 4K update, the Super Duper Graphics Pack introduces features like dynamic shadows, lighting that streams through fog, movement in leaves and grass, new textures for mobs and villagers, directional lighting, edge highlighting and more!

One of the many surprises from the Microsoft conference, was the announcement that Minecraft multiplayer will soon be possible across multiple platforms.

However, Minecraft is not coming to Sony's PlayStation 4, and the company said they didn't have to announce on that now. In doing so, that would make great strides in curbing the alienation of consumer bases, and perhaps even extend the life of certain games; more players equals longer lifetimes. Additionally any content that is purchased on older versions of the game, will be available across devices. While they won't be getting access to the "Bedrock" version, they will remain separate but will be grouped under the umbrella term "Minecraft Java Edition".

Players will also receive the free "Super-Duper Graphics Pack", DLC heading this fall, which, judging by the trailer, appears to completely restructure elements of Minecraft's rendering system entirely.

As previously covered, Microsoft began pushing for cross-platform play between different console networks and PC in March of previous year. We'll be launching with four servers - Lifeboat, Mineplex, InPVP, and Cubecraft - with more to follow. The organization said that it had more than 70 million month to month active users worldwide toward the end of March, while PlayStation Plus revealed 26.4 million paid users.
