WA Congress members respond to Virginia shooting

The victims included a member of congressional staff and two police officers, according to witness accounts from some of the approximately 25 Republican lawmakers present at the baseball practice.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise speaks with Peter Welch before the markup of the the American Health Care Act, the Republican replacement to Obamacare, on Capitol Hill in Washington on March 8, 2017. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Scalise is the majority whip who rallies Republican votes in the House of Representatives. Scalise's office released a statement that said he is "undergoing surgery" and "in stable condition".

Law enforcement authorities in the United States have said that the shooting appears to be a "deliberate attack", with the shooter being arrested a short time after the incident.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday is expected to address the shooting that occurred at a GOP congressional baseball practice which resulted in five people injured, including a top House Republican.

President Trump in a statement has just confirmed that the assailant has died from his injuries.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said in an interview with CNN that Scalise was the only Congressional member shot and that it took about 10 minutes to take the shooter down.

"Fifty (shots) would be an understatement, I'm quite sure", Flake said when asked about the total amount of gunfire, including police returning fire.

According to a source, when Democratic members of Congress practicing at a different ballfield miles away heard of the shooting, they immediately stopped and said a prayer together, CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton reports.

Scalise underwent surgery for his injuries, according to his official Facebook page, and is now listed in stable condition.

The president, who cast Scalise as a "fighter", said he will recover and has the prayers of the nation and world behind him.

Representative Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Mich., said Scalise was standing on second base when he was shot. She said the shooting "went on for quite a while". Capitol Police were also at the scene.

James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville was shot by the U.S. Capitol Police who were on the scene during the Congressional practice. The Louisiana Representative, other members of Congress, and staff were present.

"Please pray for those who were injured".
