Erdogan's Guards to Be Charged in Beating of Protesters, US Officials Say

Erdogan's Guards to Be Charged in Beating of Protesters, US Officials Say

The charges were officially filed on Tuesday, the USA attorney's office for D.C. said.

The showdown between Erdogan's guards and the protesters came as tensions between the USA and Turkey continued to rise over America's backing of the Syrian Kurdish rebels.

Two Canadians are among more than a dozen people sought in connection with a violent attack on protesters during an official visit by Turkey's president to the USA capital last month.

Slamming the USA for the detentions and the arrest warrants, Erdoğan said, "What kind of a law is that?"

Erdogan's security detail returned with him to Turkey after his visit.

"If they attempt to enter the USA, they will be arrested", Newsham said, calling on the suspects to turn themselves in.

A video posted online showed men in dark suits chasing protesters and punching and kicking them as police struggled to intervene. He can be seen running past police officers and kicking at least two people who had fallen to the ground, including a man who had been kicked in the face. Eleven people were injured and nine were hospitalized, as Erdogan watched from his Mercedes-Benz.

"Our understanding is those two individuals have Canadian addresses, but we're unable to confirm if they're in fact citizens", a police spokesperson said. Two other men were arrested at the scene - one for aggravated assault and the other for assaulting a police officer. Both face charges of assault causing significant bodily injury. Turkish Ambassador Serdar Kılıç was also summoned to the State Department following the altercation, which the State Department condemned, pledging that officials were "communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms".

Holman told the judge that Yildirim has received death threats because of the case. But President Donald Trump declined to say anything about the attack, and the State Department was careful in its public statements. Prosecutors told the judge Yildirim had been arrested twice in the late 90s on simple assault charges, but the charges were later dismissed.

The fracas added to already strained U.S.

It was a brutal display of violence that played out in broad daylight in Washington, DC, and now United States authorities are charging members of the Turkish president's security detail.

"We will defend the First Amendment, and we will make sure our laws are being enforced", Bowser said Thursday.

The men, some dressed in suits and ties, were captured on video brushing past USA law enforcement and beating up protesters in what Washington police described as a "brutal attack".

The violence erupted in broad daylight in Washington's diplomatic quarter, just minutes after Erdogan arrived at the ambassador's residence from the White House.

Upon learning of the charges, Turkey's Foreign Ministry summoned John Bass, the USA ambassador to Turkey, to issue a protest.
