Admin revokes blocked program to protect immigrant parents

The Homeland Security Department announced on Thursday that it would keep in place the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, allowing undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children to remain in the country.

That is welcome news for about 70 undocumented students who received Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status and are enrolled in medical schools nationwide.

The Trump administration is continuing an Obama-era program shielding "Dreamers", the so-called undocumented immigrants who came to the United States illegally as children. DAPA was never fully implemented [DHS fact sheet] because "federal courts halted the policy".

"DAPA and DACA are two different programs", a spokeswoman for DHS said.

Grimaldo says what's most concerning was a February executive order that directed his administration to enforce the nation's immigration laws more aggressively, sometimes deporting immigrants with no criminal background. The program has granted work permits and temporary reprieve from deportation to hundreds of thousands of young adults who came to the country as children without authorization.

Trump has been inconsistent on his statements about DACA, which was established by President Obama in 2012, having decried it on the campaign as an "illegal executive amnesty" program.

However, Trump has seemed to reverse his stance on DACA, as The New York Times reported today (June 16).

But he's taken a softer line on the program affecting young immigrants, who are sometimes referred to as "Dreamers".

"I applaud President Trump for acknowledging what President Obama himself acknowledged over 20 times - the Obama Administration's DAPA immigration edict was a violation of law and the separation of powers".

Numerous 800,000 immigrants protected by the DACA program did not know that they were in the country illegally, and many reportedly attended American schools from a young age.

DAPA, created under the administration of former President Barack Obama in 2014, was blocked by a federal judge in Texas after 26 states challenged the program's policies. In Friday's statement, Codognolla warned the decision doesn't herald Trump's administration turning a leaf over its immigration policies. "We are an asset and I think he's realizing that".

Some Trump supporters will no doubt be indignant at a broken campaign promise.

But Trump's decision must be seen in the context of his overall immigration enforcement strategies - because despite this development, immigrants continue to live in fear across the country. However, deportations have slightly gone down as less number of people has been caught crossing the Mexican border illegally.

In an April interview with the Associated Press, Trump said those in the program could "rest easy" because "this is a case of heart".
