Tillerson cancels trip to Mexico to work on Qatar crisis

The F-15 deal could give Qatar the sense that it can defy its Gulf neighbors and still enjoy a good relationship with the US, despite Trump's own statements that he backs the Saudi position.

The move has been backed by nations including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and others. Those cuts have seen global air travel disrupted and threatened the airline's revenues.

President Donald Trump has called Qatar a leading sponsor of terrorism but, on Thursday, the Pentagon went ahead with a $12 billion F-15 fighter jet sale to Doha.

Al-Marri focused on measures that impacted people on both sides of the dispute — how the Gulf Arab states behind the blockade ordered all Qataris to leave within 14 days while calling their own citizens back from Qatar. Prior to escalating tensions, such a deal not only behooved American business and industrial incentives, but also made sense from a force projection standpoint considering the location of US Central Command within Qatar's borders. It wasn't immediately clear if the two deals were one in the same. Significantly the defense and state departments tried to be neutral in the conflict. Qatar's ambassador to the United States, Meshal Hamad al-Thani, posted a picture of the signing ceremony on Twitter.

This week, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Saudi-led diplomatic and economic boycott of Qatar would not affect military operations out of Qatar's Al-Udeid airbase. The decisions were taken in full conformity with the fundamental principles of Public International Law.

It put the U.S.in a hard position because it is allied with nations on both sides of the dispute. He could be seen by the world as Riyadh's protectorate of sorts by ensuring it had the most sophisticated USA hardware available to protect itself. He called the trip a "routine port visit".

Teams across many sports, including top European soccer clubs such as Bayern Munich, regularly use Qatar's state-of-the-art sports infrastructure for winter training camps.

The Qatari and U.S. navies carry out joint exercises off the Qatari coast around four times a year, said Commander Al- Kuwari, the joint exercise commander.

Four ships from the US Navy took part. "Isolating and punishing Qatar runs counter to the goal of getting its leadership to address USA concerns, their argument goes". Mattis has described Qatar as "moving in the right direction", while U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said called for Arab Gulf nations to remain united.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and others severed diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar nearly two weeks ago, accusing Doha of supporting extremist groups, which Doha denies. Despite its tiny size, Qatar is the largest producer of natural gas in the Middle East; it is wealthy and has friends.

The recent mixed message from the Trump administration, however, has it working even harder, he said.

He said that exercises involving Qatar and its allies would continue. But the current crisis is achieving the opposite, creating new fault lines between Arabs and pushing Qatar potentially closer to Iran. He also reiterated Turkey's "deep sadness" over the incident. "[Saudi Arabia and its allies] said they would take a hard line on funding.extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar".

In one case, he said, a Qatari woman was ordered to leave the UAE where she lived with her husband and infant.

"Qatar has failed to honour the pledge it made in 2013, to refrain from funding terrorism, interfering in the internal affairs of other countries in the region and destabilising these countries".

The latest developments relating to Qatar and Iran mark a further deterioration in the regional security situation, setting up the possibility of a direct military confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic.
