London fire: Tower victims 'may never be identified'

Music mogul Simon Cowell has admitted that the fire at London's Grenfell Tower, which is less than a mile from his home, "sent chills through him" and has prompted him to make a charity record with all proceeds going to those affected by the horror blaze.

"At least 30 fatalities have been confirmed; the bodies of 12 people have been recovered and are at a mortuary, which includes one person who has also died at hospital. The other deceased remain inside the building. Based on what we know there is nothing to suggest that the fire was started deliberately", Cundy said.

Activists held up posters with pictures of people still missing after the deadly inferno.

"Sadly at this time, there are 58 people who we have been told were in Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing and therefore sadly I have to assume that they are dead", Commander Stuart Cundy told reporters, insinuating the figure could change.

London Fire Brigade said it had rescued 65 people and that firefighters managed to battle all the way to the top floor.

On Friday fire crews again used water to damp down the charred building as they began a third day of picking through the tower's charred remains.

Teams were forced to leave the building on Thursday afternoon when the fire restarted, delaying further the efforts to reach upper floors, where some victims are thought to have been trapped.

There were also angry scenes outside the Clement James Centre, in North Kensington. Scotland Yard has opened a separate criminal investigation. British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn proposed putting some of them up in empty luxury homes owned by wealthy residents of the area - which is a fairly affluent neighborhood.

The first victim to be formally identified was Mohammed Alhajali, a 23-year-old Syrian refugee, who came to Britain in 2014 with his brother.

"Mohammed undertook a risky journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the United Kingdom, in his own home", the Syrian Solidarity Campaign said in a statement.

BBC Newsnight reports that the type of cladding on the outside of Grenfell Tower, installed in 2015 during a refurbishment, had a polyethylene - or plastic - core, instead of a more fireproof alternative with a mineral core.

More than £1 million has been raised to help those affected by the fire, with more than 60 tonnes of donations collected by one local mosque.

So far, 17 people have been reported dead in the fire and some 70 people have been hospitalized for injuries sustained in the incident, including 20 people whose condition is critical.
