Portugal goal against Mexico annulled after video review

The 32-year-old Real Madrid striker, who is in Russian Federation as Portugal prepare for their Confederations Cup opener against Mexico, is said to be "outraged" after prosecutors accused him of defrauding the authorities of 14.7million euros (£12.8million).

There was huge focus on Ronaldo after news broke on Friday of his desire to leave Real Madrid and quit Spain for good because of his unhappiness at a tax investigation against him, but he frequently cut an isolated figure up front due to Portugal coach Fernando Santos' cautious tactics.

Portugal had an early effort controversially disallowed by the video referees but they eventually took the lead after 34 minutes through Ricardo Quaresma after a mistake by Carlos Salcedo let Cristiano Ronaldo through on goal.

Ronaldo previous year extended his contract with the Spanish team until June 21, saying he wanted to end his career at the club.

The Confederations Cup is the main warm-up event for the 2018 World Cup. "There are very strong national teams in this tournament", Silva said.

A regular of Portugal's youth teams, Silva began attracting headlines when he joined Porto's senior squad and played well from the start, finishing the season with 21 goals.

The 26-year-old told the official website of the Confederations Cup: "It goes without saying that he's a great player".

Cristiano Ronaldo is not letting accusations of tax fraud and fresh transfer speculation get to him, according to Portugal team-mate Andre Silva.

Ronaldo has scored 12 goals in six worldwide outings since coming off injured in the Euro final, but Mexico - winners of the Confederations Cup in 1999 - are confident they can stop him.

Portugal vs Mexico was always going to be one of the better fixtures in a slightly underwhelming competition, and it has delivered, after 45 minutes anyway.

Mexico, who drew 1-1 at home to the United States in World Cup qualifying last weekend, will look to Real Sociedad's Carlos Vela and Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez for inspiration.

Meanwhile, the second game on the day will come from Group B and it will see Chile taking on Cameroon. Now we need to think of the next game, which we have to win.

The South Americans were hoping forward Alexis Sanchez would recover fully to play in the opener, but he's not fully fit.
