India calls for greater cooperation among BRICS nations

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will push the development of the BRICS New Development Bank, ensuring it plays an important role in BRICS cooperation, according to an official document released after the second BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors meeting.

A media note of the meeting said the ministers deplored the continued terrorist attacks, including in some BRICS countries.

Together the BRICS countries account for roughly 40 percent of the world population and 20 percent of the global economy.

South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane pointed to climate change as a major concern.

On Friday, China said Foreign Ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa would have a candid discussion on terrorism.

Backing Singh, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China was opposed to terrorism in all forms and it is also a victim of terrorism.

The 2017 BRICS Games, seen as a prelude to the 2017 BRICS Summit to be held in Xiamen, is a clear indication that economic and sporting development are closely linked.

"They laid down directions for us and for both the countries for mutual respect and mutual cooperation", he said.

Gen. Singh highlighted that all the BRICS nations supported India's call for an early adoption of a comprehensive UN convention against worldwide terrorism.

In their focus on regional and global security, the BRICS foreign ministers backed "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned" national reconciliation programme in Afghanistan, as well as a "Syrian-led, Syrian-owned" political process which safeguarded the state sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria. "The Brics Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism concluded its meeting in May 2017", he said.

Leaders of the five nations are to meet in the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen in September.

"At present the global situation has complexities and also factors of instability and it's right for the BRICS to speak its voice, which is very good", Xi said. The United States has called for greater action from China to pressure Pyongyang into abandoning its weapons programs.

The joint statement also backed the Paris climate accord in a reaffirmation that comes after US President Donald Trump pulled out of the agreement, accusing India and China of trying to extract "billions and billions and billions" of dollars in foreign aid from developed countries in the name of climate change.

"Your chairmanship certainly contributed to the strength. and to increasing its reputation as a factor of stability", Lavrov told Xi.
