Knives coming out: Trump fans float idea of firing investigator Mueller

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating President Trump for possible obstruction of justice, five people with knowledge of the situation told The Washington Post.

PBS's Judy Woodruff reported Monday that Trump friend Chris Ruddy told her after visiting the White House that Trump is "considering perhaps terminating" Mueller - a decision that would set off a massive political backlash.

Trump has faced numerous allegations of the offence since his inauguration in January, and calls for him to be investigated increased following testimony to the Senate intelligence committee last week by sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

Rosenstein said that because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation matter, Mueller could only be fired by Rosenstein himself.

The White House did not immediately issue a comment.

The talk about dismissing Mr Mueller appeared to be coming from Trump allies, including some close to White House strategist Steve Bannon, who are increasingly frustrated with the prospect of a long and winding probe.

High-profile supporters of President Donald Trump are turning on special counsel Robert Mueller, the man charged with investigating Russian interference in the US election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign. If Trump were to make such a move, he would have to order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

The president previously said that fired FBI Director James Comey assured him in private conversation that he was not under investigation.

Why would Trump consider firing Mueller?

After initially being praised by Republicans and Democrats for his integrity, in recent days Mueller's impartiality as special counsel has been questioned by some Trump supporters.

"Chris speaks for himself", a senior administration official told the Daily Caller in an email.

Lawyer Jay Sekulow, a member of Mr Trump's legal team, has also refused to rule out Mr Mueller's possible sacking.

"I think he's weighing that option", he said referring to Trump.

After the meeting with Mueller, Warner was asked by CNN's Manu Raju whether the committee is looking into obstruction of justice or if that was part of the special counsel investigation.

Three members of the legal team known to have been hired so far by Mueller have given political donations nearly exclusively to Democrats, according to a CNN analysis of Federal Election Commission records.

"There are some real conflicts". Look who he is hiring.check fec reports. Gingrich added that those who believe the investigation is going to be. "Don't waste our time".
