The Google app feed is about to get more personal

The new feed that Google is rolling to users around the world over the next few days will let users know news-related and other content directly from the Google app, instead of the updates they were used to seeing courtesy of Now.

Those in the U.S. can see the new feed experience in action by opening the Google app for both Android and iOS. According to TechCrunch, the Google homepage on the desktop and mobile web is also expected to receive similar features, but the details about it are not available yet.

XAutoplay: On | OffThe unit of Alphabet (GOOGL) is introducing a tailored feed of news, entertainment and myriad web content based on users' searches, YouTube video views and other personal information.

The feed includes topics now trending in your area, and Google also pulls in information from other services, including Google Maps, Gmail, and YouTube searches. Users can also manually follow topics of interest right from Search by clicking a new Follow button next to search results such as movies, sports teams, musicians, or celebrities.

Google is also making it super easy to learn more about specific topics you see in your feed.

Shashi Thakur, VP, Engineering, Google, said, "To provide information from diverse perspectives, news stories may have multiple viewpoints from a variety of sources, as well as other related information and articles".

Although Google won't say so explicitly, this is a response to the widespread "Google Docs" phishing email that affected many Google users in May. For us, the feed was dominated by consumer technology news, plus some of the larger political stories of the day.

"Google should be working in the background, even when you're not searching", Gomes said, "to further your interests and turn your queries into actual knowledge".

Of all the Google iOS apps I use on my iPhone, I use the main Google search app the least.

The updates to a format Google first unveiled last December come a day after Amazon unveiled Spark, its own feed of product photos and stories created to help subscribers to its Prime service find products to buy more easily. It will also reflect your interest level for various topics. Once clicked, the plugin asked users to log in via their Google credentials, and that's when the problems really started. But Google's feed is different from Facebook in that it displays information based on you, not shared by your friends.

Previously Google Now was placed below the search bar, but now one gets a prompt to activate the feed.

The changes will come first to the English version of the Google app for Android and iOS.

It isn't clear if you will be able to follow any search results, or only ones that trigger a knowledge panel style result, such as the Stranger Things example above.
