YouTube Now Redirects Potential ISIS Recruits To Anti-Terrorist Video

This is just an early release of the Redirect Method. The service was boycotted by hundreds of advertisers earlier this year, after it came to light that their ads were appearing in videos espousing violent extremism and hate rhetoric.

Jigsaw - Alphabet's security incubator - and counter-extremist startup Moonshot CVE partnered up to create the Redirect Method.

YouTube has taken the first step toward for battling against the rise of extremist content on its platform by introducing a redirect to steer people away from terrorism-related videos.

According to the Redirect Method website, "It focuses on the slice of ISIS' audience that is most susceptible to its messaging, and redirects them towards curated YouTube videos debunking ISIS recruiting themes".

The two companies had conducted extensive research to "understand how extremist groups leverage technology to spread their message and recruit new members" before YouTube actually brought the model into practice.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai.Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesGoogle announced it is adding a feature to YouTube to redirect anyone searching for extremist content to videos that decry terrorism.

The company also plans to work with "expert" non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to develop more videos to counter extremist messaging that's aimed at people who are at different stages of the radicalization process.

Terrorist groups have long used YouTube to post extremist videos aimed at radicalizing and recruiting potential targets.

We will have to wait and see if this method works on YouTube.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has increasingly called for tech companies like Facebook and Google to do more to combat Islamic extremism in Europe. Governments have since criticized the most influential social media platforms for not taking enough steps to curb extremism (despite the possible censorship and free speech issues). As part of last month's announcements, it said that it was increasing the technology it uses to identify extremist and terrorism-related videos as well as increasing the number of human experts in YouTube's "trusted flagger" program.
