Israel bans Muslim men under 50 from praying at Jerusalem mosque

But the protests have spun out of control, leaving three Palestinian demonstrators dead in Jerusalem this Friday and motivating a terror attack that killed three Israeli settlers in Halamish on Friday evening.

The riots, which were incited by Palestinian leaders, erupted after Friday prayers in response to Israel's decision to install metal detectors at the entrance gates to the Temple Mount.

Clashes have been taking place across East Jerusalem, with Palestinians furious at security measures imposed at the ultra-sensitive Al-Aqsa mosque.

The Palestinian attacker, according to the army, was shot and injured.

Israeli Government forbade under 50-year-old Palestinians to enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israeli media reported that the Palestinian attacker was shot and wounded and also taken to hospital.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced he was freezing ties with Israel over the installation of metal detectors, dealing a blow to fledgling Trump administration efforts to try to renew long-dormant peace talks.

Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets at the rioters who officials say hurled bottles, rocks and firebombs, the jarring sounds echoing through the ancient alleyways.

Resisting global pressure to remove the metal detectors, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet insisted that they were needed to prevent arms being smuggled into the shrine.

"In and around the area of the old city there are thousands of police officers and border police units that will respond to any incident whatsoever", said Israeli Police spokesperosn Micky Rosenfeld.

Two days later the site was reopened with metal detectors in place.

The Israeli channel also said that al-Abed left an online statement that he felt obligated to take action after the recent attacks by Israeli forces against Palestinians and the al-Aqsa mosque, but IMEMC has not verified that statement.

The unrest follows revelations on Thursday that Israel's Construction and Housing Ministry is planning a further expansion of settlements which could cut off East Jerusalem from the West Bank city of Ramallah.
