Texas congressman singles out 'female senators from the Northeast' over health care

"That being said, I'm extremely frustrated with Senate Republicans who are breaking their promise to the American people to repeal and replace Obamacare". John McCain, R-Ariz. arrive on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, July 25, 2017, as the Senate was to vote on moving head on health care with the goal of erasing much of Barack Obama's law.

Before voting began, a group of protesters shouted "kill the bill'" and "shame" from the Senate's galleries.

The approach was not flying with some Republicans.

"We can go through regular order, we want to work with you, we know the ACA is not ideal, but we also know what you proposed is much worse", added Schumer. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Dean Heller of Nevada and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, will support the motion to proceed.

"I will plead one last time with my friends on the other side of the aisle; and I know you have sincerely tried to modify and change things". Senate Republicans have considered two versions but have been unable to reach consensus after estimates showed they could lead to as many as 22 million fewer Americans being insured.

With less than three weeks before the Senate is to leave Washington for its already-delayed summer recess, Trump took to his bully pulpit and demanded his party get in line. Well, Obamacare is death.

Trump has repeatedly grilled fellow Republicans for not following through on their - and his - campaign pledge to repeal and replace Obamacare, something he said he aimed to do immediately once in office in January.

Republicans hold 52 of 100 Senate seats.

But Republicans can only afford to lose two votes. John McCain returned from Arizona where he is battling brain cancer to cast a crucial vote on proceeding on health care.

Both of Michigan's senators, Democrats Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, voted no along with the rest of their caucus.

President Trump has already put on the pressure on senators in his party.

The question is, what, exactly, will they be voting on?

Republican Senator Bob Corker said the goal was to gain enough votes to get a bill through the Senate and send it to the House of Representatives, which passed its own bill to replace Obamacare in May, for negotiations. Moderates are anxious repeal will cost low-income Americans their insurance and conservatives are angry the proposed bills do not go far enough to gut Obamacare.

Debate will now begin, most likely on a measure to fully repeal the law, also known as Obamacare.
