Nikki Haley says 'China is aware they must act' on North Korea

Some diplomats had expected the United States, Japan and South Korea to ask for the 15-member U.N. Security Council to meet on Monday over the test. Haley said on Sunday that the United States saw "no point in having an emergency session if it produces nothing of outcome".

"An additional Security Council resolution that does not significantly increase the global pressure on North Korea is of no value", she said. Though Haley did not explicitly echo the president's belief that China "could easily solve" the issue of North Korea, her statement did urge China to take immediate action.

The United States and Russian Federation have waged rival campaigns at the Security Council over the type of ballistic missile fired by North Korea on July 4.

CBS News reported Saturday that the US was seeking an emergency session on Monday, but Haley shot down such reporting as "mistaken".

But on Saturday, Trump said on Twitter that he was "very disappointed in China" which he said profits from trade with the United States but does "NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk".

Haley on Sunday released a statement, saying that there is no point in having an emergency session if it produces nothing of outcome.

Haley's push for the U.N.to get tough on the rogue regime has met with resistance from Russian Federation and China, two of the five countries that have the power of veto.

"There is no point in having an emergency session if it produces nothing of effect", Haley said.

The statement came in response to the North's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) demonstration on Friday night.

Early in his presidency, US President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and had expressed hope Beijing would use its economic clout to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Also on Sunday, the US Missile Defense Agency announced the United States had successfully shot down a medium-range missile in the latest test of its THAAD missile defence program which is created to protect the country against potential threats from countries such as North Korea and Iran.

"If the two heads of state talk, they will likely discuss their respective stances on North Korea, the U.S".

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urged all countries to support stronger United Nations sanctions against North Korea. We will no longer allow this to continue.
