Raids On Karnataka Minister Managing Gujarat Lawmakers, 11 Crore Seized

In the backdrop of Gujarat Congress MLAs quitting and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as many as 44 of the grand old party MLAs left for Bengaluru recently to ensure they don't succumb to police and political pressure to join the saffron party.

Officials privy to the early morning raids said I-T sleuths reached the Eagleton resort near here to question the minister, who was staying at the resort for the night.

Bengaluru:Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday dubbed Income Tax (IT) raids at residence of Karnataka power minister DK Shivakumar as "undemocratic".

Gohil also appealed to the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognisance of the matter for the MLAs' safety.

"It is now becoming a trend to blatantly misuse powers of the state", he added.

Congress has also accused the incumbent Gujarat government of trying to lure 22 Congress lawmakers by offering Rs 15 crores and asking them to cross vote during the polls.

Union Minister Arun Jaitley countered him saying the Minister "parked himself" in the resort and the area is not immune to conduct searches.

The I-T department issued a statement denying the raids were related to the stay of the Gujarat MLAs.

"Therefore, the BJP demands that direction for using NOTA option in the election for Rajya Sabha in the state of Gujarat be withdrawn with immediate effect", the BJP said. Sources say crores was recovered from his custody in multiple raids which were conducted in various locations across the country.

Later talking to the media, Gehlot said: "In spite of all the manipulations, we will win the Rajya Sabha poll in Gujarat". "But there is no doubt that Ahmed Patel is winning with a comfortable margin", Kharge said. It said the searches were part of an evidence-gathering exercise. While speaking at a press conference in Jaipur, he said, "It's a deliberate raid by the I-T on the direction of the Central government, and the Congress is keeping its flock of 44 MLAs who feared threats and horse-trading from the BJP".
